Snorkeling
A Poem by Claire Gibbons, 9th Grade
clouds swirl around the sapphire sky like gauzy curtains
as I plunge into the sparking Hawaiian sea,
tripping on my flippers on my way in.
the shallow white sand reflects the burning sun.
I swim out,
deeper and deeper into the clear water, escaping the humid air.
below me lies an undiscovered universe.
parrot fish comets and sea turtles planets surround me like satellites.
I am an astronaut in a galaxy of aquatic aliens.
my hand scapes across the rigid edge of a reef barrier.
the exotic zebra stripes of an eel dart under the coral.
the tilapia tickle my toes.
rays of sunshine hit my skin
as I exit the depths.
a coastal abyss.
clouds swirl around the sapphire sky like gauzy curtains
as I plunge into the sparking Hawaiian sea,
tripping on my flippers on my way in.
the shallow white sand reflects the burning sun.
I swim out,
deeper and deeper into the clear water, escaping the humid air.
below me lies an undiscovered universe.
parrot fish comets and sea turtles planets surround me like satellites.
Starry Night
A Poem by Ainsley Voeks, 9th Grade
1. Giggles encase the rough, carved
bark of an oak’s breath--
through the silence of the moon
blossoming within constellations.
2. Below the sliver of moonlight; a casting
of hope’s shadow within the beating heart--
a bashful star twirling and dancing with its
bold brothers in the heavens above.
3. Under the wind’s sigh;
above the swirling storm--
lights fold within the angry clouds
and terrorize the youthful twinkles.
4. As the clouds creep over the
celestials, the clock crows into the crisp
midnight breeze-- allowing for the stars to disappear
under the blanket of the night’s satellite.
5. The navy mountains doze along
the rolling plains-- who swallow the hills
where the houses glow with affection
residing within hushed souls.
6. Giggles encase the gentle, sculpted
grass within the Starry Night--
through the silence of the moon
which is terrorized by the cloud’s roar.
